This brief New York Daily News piece leaves the reader with the impression that the Minutemen themselves instigated the trouble.
I suspect most casual readers will accept that account of the incident, having been fed the belief that the Minutemen and Gilchrist are dangerous extremists.
But this New York Sun article gives a very different picture of events:
At Columbia, Students Attack Minuteman Founder
by Eliana Johnson
Students stormed the stage at Columbia University's Roone auditorium yesterday, knocking over chairs and tables and attacking Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the Minutemen, a group that patrols the border between America and Mexico.''
[...]The student protesters, who attended the event clad in white as a sign of dissent, booed and shouted the speakers down throughout. They interrupted Mr. Stewart, who is African-American, when he referred to the Declaration of Independence's self-evident truth that "All men are created equal," calling him a racist, a sellout, and a black white supremacist.
A student's demand that Mr. Stewart speak in Spanish elicited thundering applause and brought the protesters to their feet. The protesters remained standing, turned their backs on Mr. Stewart for the remainder of his remarks, and drowned him out by chanting, "Wrap it up, wrap it up!"
I despair for my country when I see this kind of savage behavior and obstinate closed-mindedness on the part of these 'students'. This is the generation who will be in charge of this country a couple of decades from now, or sooner. They, along with millions of 'immigrants' from hostile cultures are the future of this country, unless we turn things around.
How has it come to be that there is such a gulf between the younger (post-boomer) generations and the values of traditional America? I know all the standard explanations, and have resorted to them myself. But the fact is, none of the explanations suffice. Just as with the whole immigration travesty, none of the standard explanations suffice. The situation, with our population sorely divided, with many turning against their parents, their elders, their ancestors, their neighbors, and siding with invaders is inexplicable.
There is something profoundly unnatural about this situation in our country; it's a kind of perversity. At the time when our media seems to be transfixed with this tawdry story of sexual perversion in Congress, there is another kind of perversity in our body politic: the bizarre spectacle of a whole segment of our population who prefer strangers, even hostile strangers to their own people. There have always been traitors, since the world began, but have there ever been so many Judases, quislings, and turncoats in any country at one time? Has there ever been such a large number of self-hating, self-abasing people?
The divisions in our country will be fatal: the 'house divided against itself,' as Jesus said. We are divided not only by politics, gender, class, and sexual orientation but even more markedly by ethnicity and race and religion.
And the many outsiders we have foolishly welcomed in to our country are a source of further division, with various hyphenated 'Americans' siding with their immigrant ethnic kin. And white American young people, who have been taught that their own people are evil, and that their own heritage is worthless, are identifying with those who want to dismantle America and possess it for themselves, to be remade to their specifications.
The very presence of all these interlopers is fomenting deeper divisions in our country; this is one more argument against more immigration: it fosters conflict, it turns American against American. The foolish PC zealots, with their need to show conspicuous compassion for the 'poor immigrants' will gladly turn on their own people, as this little melee at Columbia shows.
The enemies of America must surely be enjoying the war they are initiating.
And to add further frustration to this situation, there is absolutely no dialogue going on between the warring factions. There is little or no civil debate going on, and what little debate there may be is constricted by Political Correctness and its attendant intimidation.
Something has to give; incidents like this one at Columbia will become more frequent, and probably more severe. This incident may seem trivial, but it is part of a growing pattern. The lid can't be kept on the pressure cooker indefinitely. Of course the MSM will keep on ignoring these incidents as long as possible; they have so far minimized any coverage of the clashes that have taken place, and what they can't cover up, they whitewash or spin or distort.
But this kind of mass denial cannot last.
