This is the kind of thing I alluded to in my recent blog post called 'Thou shalt not be judgmental...'. Sugar to be a controlled substance?
I think most of us could see this coming. The sugar scare has been going on since, when, the 1970s? One book called 'Sugar Blues' was responsible for much of the scare rhetoric about sugar. I remember when I was in college in the 70s that many people said 'sugar is just as addictive as cocaine', and other such over-the-top statements. So we've had several decades of sugar being blamed for bad behavior in children, academic underachievement, crimes by adults (remember the 'twinkie defense'?) and for the so-called 'epidemic ' of obesity. We've been conditioned to think that sugar is a 'decadent' or sinful substance, and now the nanny-staters are attempting to control its use, as with drugs.
And a certain number of people -- not a majority, but enough -- will call this a good thing.
